Without open source and/or relying on data coming in from outside of the vehicle‘s telematics systems they probably would eventually pass laws against this?

Once you own the hardware, you own the hardware.
You may own the hardware, but you don't own the software. Without the software, the image from the hardware does not get displayed. I expect the terms of software use are defined deep in the terms and conditions the owner knowingly, or unknowingly agrees to at the time of vehicle purchase.
In general the idea is that it is cheaper to include it for all if (and only if) they can sell enough activations. Marketing/sales must have convinced leadership that the conversion numbers will be there. I've seen this business model for decades in the IT field. Sure there are software upsells but also mainframe computers would come with multiple processors which you could activate by paying the extra licensing.
I don't really have an issue with it for lower trim lines but at some point I would rather not be "nickled and dimed" if I buy a higher trim line .. just build it into the price.
Considering how specialized of a market it is for people who actively use the camera features, I'm going to say that it was a hard sell and that Ford will be backtracking on it. Sure, the backup camera is nice but not really necessary, same for the 360 cameras. And those little cameras aren't cheap, judging by the prices they get for them aftermarket/replacement. If it's $1100 per vehicle to put them on every vehicle (per the 'build your own' website), but only 10% of your purchasers buy the subscription...you're losing money hand over fist.
Well that confirms it. Going to run my 2022 until the end of time.
Yep after GM did it I knew it was a matter of time. I’m slowly making this ‘19 into what I want and need with aftermarket electronics and parts and I will run it until the end of time with you.
It’s honestly an insult to ask over $70k for a pickup truck and THEN tell the buyer that, oh, by the way you have to make additional monthly payments if you want to keep using the things you just bought. A real slap in the face.
I rarely use the side cameras on my truck. Front and back are used a lot. My mirrors give me a better perspective than the side cameras. I could live without the 360 view. So no, I wouldn't pay for that subscription.
My early experience with the side cameras on my 23 is pretty cool to look down the side of my trailer when my turn signals are on. I'm finding myself checking the mirror and the camera before I change lanes. And I definitely use my cameras backing into my garage. ( it has a tight door, so I have to retract my mirrors. So the 360 camera is my guide when I back in.) And I use the trailer installed rear camera when I back my horse trailer down my driveway to where I park it. So I'm becoming more and more dependant on cameras.
But I don't need another monthly subscription. I never renew my Navigation software, I'm not going to pay for Sirrus, I use the free version of Pandora.
Is it possible that the subscription is just for the split view and the 360 camera is not part of the subscription?
Still doesn't make sense to have the hardware (and expensive hardware at that) installed on the truck and not be able to use it.
I'll grant that Sirus is installed on basically everything now, but that receiver can be bought for less than $100. These cameras are an $1100 option from the factory, even more if you want to add them after the fact, needing to pay for a subscription to use them is just asinine.
I fail to understand how Ford can add a monthly user fee for any option unless it is disclosed when you purchase it.
Now, if the F150 states up front you have pay a fee then buyer beware.
You guys are acting like a subscription model is a new thing, it's been around for a loooong time. Our 2023 Subaru we bought has an app similar to the FordPass app, it actually does a lot more than FordPass but that's beside the point. After 3 years which was supposedly paid for by the dealer we have to pay a yearly subscription for the use of that app if we want to continue using it. Sirius has been mentioned, that was one of the more major subscription services but there are 1000s of other subscription type services. If you don't like it, don't pay for it but then you won't be able to use it. Ford won't bat an eye when 10 guys from this forum goes to the other two brands for their HD trucks all over a silly subscription. I don't agree with them doing this but I'm not going to loose any sleep over it either and it won't change my mind on whether I'll buy another SD truck in the future.
It just makes me happy that I just got my '23(with 360 camera package), cause I would be pretty upset if my new $65k truck had a feature I'd paid for that I couldn't use with out paying Ford every month for the privilege! I don't use the factory Nav either, just my phone's google maps displayed on the trucks screen.
