Bronco axle troubles this morning. Dropping my kid of to school this morning and my 78 bronco started and kept squealing- coming from the rear axle area. I pulled it up to my shop and jacked it up and could move the wheel in and out about a 1/4 inch. Oh no!
pulled the axles, pulled the 3rd member along with the milkshake fluid. Found that some PO had broken the housing where the pinion support bearing goes. So now I'm into a new 3rd member and new axle bearing and seals and new brakes again (they got soaked in oil)
all this just 2 days after I dropped off a different dana 44 to be regeared and bought all new brakes, steering, and bearings.... Ford life
Several parts. The first was the axle bearings. I also had some bearings and pins broken in the 3rd member. And the pinion nose bearing housing is cracked. I believe this bronco had some abuse in a past life.
Sounds like you will have no problem getting it back rolling. I’m just about to drop my oil pan to fix a pesky drip at the front seal where I didn’t use rtv. Crazy how a little drip can make its way everywhere when driving. Out here in so cal you wouldn’t believe how high gas prices have risen.
