The best generation of 300/4.9
The best generation of 300/4.9
Huge 300 fan here seeking a question I've pondered for years. What generation of 300 was best in terms of reliability and endurance? I've read all about these and hope someday to rebuild one and install in a f150 or f250 for a work truck. Out of all the engine out there the 300 is my favorite hands down. As you can probably tell I'm very enthusiastic about this engine so any info is appreciated. Thanks!
The only weak link in the 300 six was the pistons.
Some of the pre-1987 engines had the tendency to break piston skirts off into the oil pan.
If you are going to rebuild a 300 you will most likely be replacing the stock cast pistons with Hypereutectic cast pistons which will serve you well.
DSS pistons now has forged pistons available.
Other than pistons, all 300 have the same reliability.
Everything you need to know about the stock 240/300 is found here.

Agreed with what pmuller said. The 300 didn't change much throughout it's run.
The biggest "weak link" I can think of is the fiber cam gears in later years. But those are external, and can easily be replaced with steel gears during a rebuild.
