1998 f150 4x4 base. Truck had been sitting for years with 47000 miles when I bought it. The shifting lever was very hard to move, today I tried to loosen the nut on the lever on the transmission which was rusted bad but I couldn't brake it loose. Now I can only move the lever from park to neutral and it will only start in neutral and not park. Now what do I do? Did I ruin something in the transmission? Any ideas?
I think you did not ruin anything, but your cable has frayed inside the housing
Pull the 2) 30 Torx bolts at the base of your column that attach the shift lever to the shift shaft
Then work the cable to shift the trans manually
I think you will not be able to move that cable easily
That means your cable is broken / frayed and needs to be replaced
Good luck

You were wright I disconnected the cable and the arm on the transmission moves as it should but the shifting lever won't so it looks like its time for a new cable. Any tips on the change?
