I have 272 y block stock for the most part. So hear is the problem yesterday driving along and truck started missing I was in second gear so drove it home and opening the hood checked wires the cap nothing loose. Must be the pump so down to Napa replaced the pump but still missing in all gear but when it’s just idling run perfect. Is it bad gas I’m thinking not because at idle we are good and even revving it up in neutral no problems only when it’s in gear. 3 on the tree. Any help or direction would be appreciated. Would the vacuum on the distributor be the issue and if so how do you check that?
To make an extremely long story short, I found out that my cheap dist cap had not seated correctly and my rotor ran into it, and cracked the rotor slightly, causing a poor idle, but if felt fine at speed.
Replaced with top of the line cap/rotor, everything happy.
So I’ll moved from stumped to stupid(maybe)
Turns out after running spark plugs and wires, fuel pump, checking advance on the distributor all was working perfect but still a problem. It turns out a loose connection on the carburetor intake manifold decided after 4 years hey I’m letting in to much air. Have never touched it no new holes no nothing just the same old firing being loose. Tightened up and like a champ running normal. Why after 4 years 🤷🏽♂️ as always you guys are the best and thanks for your insight and knowledge.
So there is a bit of a mystery to this problem. On the front of the intake manifold there is a fitting with a pipe and inside the pipe is a spring and a ball bearing(check valve) that runs around and then goes back into the back side of the engine. Is this necessary?
Shortly after the vacuum leak fix it was back to the ******* out it first but idled perfectly. So new points condenser rotor and cap with a new coil! The turn up kit. I suspect after looking it was maybe just the rotor and points that were bad but it was 20 years since any of these had been replaced. So good advice from you all. Smiles for a while until next time.
