I’ve bitten my tongue long enough. Any F-3 2wd 17” wheel will be a widow maker. Unless you’ve had custom rims mounted. Hope you’ve remedied that instead of just having a new tire mounted. Stu

Yes they are widow makers......yes I am sitting against my gas tank......yes I still have drum brakes......yes I have one brake light......yes I have 1 windshield wiper......yes I have 1 sun visor........yes I have only a left side mirror......Yes it is a gasoline powered engine.......yes I do not have seat belts.....yes I still have sealed beam headlights........and yes my turn signals do not self cancel and are usually on a lot longer than they should be......The fact is I like my old truck and intend on keeping it the way it was built regardless of how anyone feels about it.

If you want specifics beyond NHTSA statistics, you can look at the Bus 30 incident where the front wheel exploded, launching the ring along the axle wiping out the hydraulic brakes. The exploded wheel and resultant loss of brakes caused the vehicle to go out of control.
As for a bystander example, an old lady, Mrs. Little, was injured walking along the road when the side ring of an RH5° from a passing vehicle was liberated explosively thus impacting her resulting in permanent injury.
And let us not forget the great inflated RH-5 in the courtroom spectacle from one of the most famous of the RH-5 cases where the counsel for Budd brought an RH-5 into the court room. There were objections and while the inflated tire remained in the court room, snide remarks were made akin to unnecessarily putting the jury at risk and such. Because of the infuriating remarks, Budd's counsel sought a mistrial. However, the court believed that Budd was in essence sneaking an inflated RH-5° wheel into the courtroom unethically for the purpose of showing the jury that there was nothing to be afraid of. The court, however, based on the evidence shown, stated that there was plenty to be afraid of and that the spectacle that unfolded was initiated by Budd's very own counsel and ultimately denied the request for a mis/retrial.
Additionally, let us be reminded that OSHA, Firestone, the NHTSA, and various state bodies (such as Utah) looked at recalls/bans in the 80's and determined that the effort was ultimately unwarranted, not because there wasn't a deserving safety issue, but that because since the introduction of single piece rims decades earlier coupled with the estimated service live of 10-15 years, the remaining population was insignificant and declining and essentially self-regulated out of existence. This leaves us hobbyist to watch out for each other.
As for the skinny on these Firestone RH-5° rims:
New tires don't make RH-5 rims safe to use.
Using a cage, chain, or whatever doesn't make RH-5 rims safe to use.
Inspection for rust/defects does not make RH-5 rims safe to use.
Finding a shop that will assemble RH-5 rims does not make them safe to use.
Leaving them alone doesn't make them safe to use.
The best use for the rims:
Deflate &
Scrap
Save the centers for reuse on new rims
Strategically place on rolling chassis (for static parts truck or transport to the junkyard). Ideally this chassis came with safe rims that were harvested and swapped to an operational truck.
I bet he would put radials on his truck if you guys bought them for him...
I am one that trusts split rims if they are taken care of and used right, but that is just my opinion and i am not telling anyone else to do that.
I will replace mine when the time comes to do so.
Dont blast me the truck isnt on the road anyway.
I understand the risk and deflate my tires when i drive it in the city limits.
Again dont blast me I agree with you about the danger but my money is going elsewhere currently.
I understand the danger and use them anyway, but i dont put anyone else at risk of them other than me.
At the end of the day if s*** hits the fan i am the only one to get hurt.
I am one that trusts split rims if they are taken care of and used right, but that is just my opinion
NHSTA, OSHA, the courts, and many other agencies all have facts that don't support your opinion. There is absolutely no practical way to tell/inspect/verify that the rim rings on this design are seated properly (being "used right").
I understand that And i deflate them when around other people or cars, so again dont blast me i am saving up for a set of 7 19.5 rims.
But i refuse to put my truck on the backburner until i get the rims, they will be bought when they get bought and no sooner.
I am doing the best i can with what i have.
If you are so worried than you can help pay for them, because you shouldn't complain until you are willing to do something about it first.
I UNDERSTAND THE DANGER!!!
Understanding and appreciating the danger =/= trusting these split rims if "used right", or putting them through deflation and inflation cycles.
Understanding and appreciating the danger = permanent removal of the flawed design from service.
Not being able to afford the parts for remediation = not being able to afford to operate the truck; it is not a viable excuse. Hopefully the leads you indicated that you have on proper sets of wheels pan out as they seemed like exceptional deals.
i have the 7 wheels piled up by the junkyard warehouse door waiting to pay $600 for all 7 of them with 5 having brand new 40 year old triple regrooveable tires on them for me to put tubes in.
i cant just put the truck on blocks as it still needs to be movable for access of other cars into my shop.
I am trying to do this as safe as i can.
But unless you guys are willing to help me with buying these wheels, stop blasting me about this.
And i deflate the tires as heat builds pressure inside of the tubes, i dont put air into them at all.
I dont inflate them i just relieve pressure.
