Hi everyone,
My father has a 1995 2.3 four cylinder regular cab, 4x4 with the long box and a 5 speed manual. Recently he has been complaing of a vibration so I took it out to see what it was. It vibrates starting at 45 and gets it worst at 50 no matter what gear it is in and no matter if the transfer case is in 4wd high or 2wd. When I let off the gas and let it coast in gear is stops. The vibration isn't felt in the steering. I'm thinking the U-joints. What do you guys think.
Thanks for your insight,
-Phil
I'd take a peek at the u-joints too. Then the pinnion bearings. Then the tires/wheels/rotors/drums.
. . but you didn't mention any noise or clunking or anything ~like~ that; so both our theories are "ify" at best.
HTH.

Well, there is a clunking. Its real bad but it has been clunking since it was bought new but just started to vibrate. If its in first with the clutch out and you let off the gas then hit the gas and then let off again the truck will kind of lurch forward and backward and start clunking. There is also a slight squeeking noise that comes from the rear sometimes when the truck is started out from a stop.
Do you think this changes my theory?
Thanks again,
-Phil
Thanks for the help. I would like to clear up what I said above though. The truck has been clunking since we bought it, but we bought it used last year, so it hasn't been clunking since new. Also, The truck, dispite it's age (8 years) only has 65,000 miles on it.
Thanks again,
-Phil
Does the vibration disappear after 50?
Try rotating the tires front to back. Tires do funny things sometimes, depending on make of tire.
When checking the u-joints, try holding one part (say diff input or trans output) and turn the other (say driveshaft). Kind of like trying to flatten out the letter x.
I put my fingers where they cover both sides of the joint houseing, then I just stick a skinny screwdriver into the u-joint assembly and try to turn it back and forth(truck should be in gear on flat surface motor turned off) ...If the joint is loose you'll feel the squeeze on your fingers....also try prying the joint up and down....If it's a vibration hard like you describe it'll show up in that 10 second test....You never said if you "coasted" back down to below 45 before it stops, if so, then I was wondering also if one of the tires might have a broken belt and is bulging-check for that while under the rig...Check the rear end for fluid, stick a hose down into it and spin it around, this is a way to get a sample of any metal particles settled at the bottom of your differencial which would indicate issues in the rear end...either that or remove the cover....You say it's not in the front end-if it was you'd of felt it sure through the steering in 4 wheel drive - so we assume you feel it's definatly in the rear....can you feel it viabrate through the stick shifter???????
I really haven't had time to get under it yet being that I work every day and so does my father. The clunking and vibration is not felt in the shifter but it the clunking is heard right below me. Probably in the front U joint. The vibration does go away anytime the throttle is lifted no matter what the speed. The tires are all new and don't seem to have a bulge. They have been rotated about a month ago.
Thanks alot guys. As soon as I get under the truck I'll let you know what I find out.
