I’m restoring my truck and I am going to put an original radio in after I have it rebuilt. I have the option of AM or AM/FM. I want to put whichever was originally in it but I am not sure what it had. Is there a way to look at the vin and see what it had? I’m a very **** person and I want it to be as correct as possible.

 

if you order a marti report, it should show what it came with. If you don't want to spend the $$ for that, you can look for clues as to whether or not the truck has speakers in the door, or just a single speaker in the dash...

 

Does the door speaker indicate that it was am/fm?

 

An AM/FM Mono radio would have the same dash speaker as the AM only radio ... AM/FM Stereo would have had two door speakers I think. I don't think they used a single dual cone 2 in 1 type speaker.

I have a AM/FM Mono radio, it came out of a '79 wrecker and it had just the dash speaker.

 

Since you are "particular" enough to want it to be 100% VIN correct items, then purchasing a Marti deluxe report is the best way to know what is had or came with from the factory. So the report shows a AM/FM stereo and CB but the part number sheet only shows the AM/FM but no CB?
So I am guessing the AM/FM was 1 part and the CB was a different part?
In later years, 80's? the the AM/FM & CB were all in 1 radio package unit not 2 parts.

It’s not the greatest picture but I do have speakers in the door. I can’t tell if they are original or not since I’ve never had one with door speakers and not many in my area did. Thanks

 

Does not look like a factory door speaker grill (metal cover) on the back side of the plastic door panel. Also just check the door hinge area for OEM looking wiring harness. OEM harness will have a round rubber boot.

 

correct. The cb was a separate unit. Wiring could connect to radio wiring if it was mono, but stereo didn't, both shared antenna via a splitter.
