Jimmy Buffett passed last evening and I am feeling so much older today. I hope you find an endless supply of cheeseburgers and cold brews in your paradise Jimmy... you will be missed!
We were woken this morning by a text from my step son with the news. We are huge Buffett fans and are reading the posts on FB and listening to Margaritaville station on XM. He is a true legend who will be missed. RIP Jimmy, we'll raise a margarita in your honor at 5.
I really enjoyed his music and philosophy. I first became aware of his groupies in summer of 1983 when I was living in South Carolina and gang of people I knew were going to travel to Carowinds in Charlotte NC to see him and wear rubber shark fins on their heads. At the time I thought it was a bit extreme (and expensive) to go on such a distant adventure. "Was he really that good?" I wondered. I passed and instead spent my money trying to keep my old Ford on the road. After the group came back from that trip they talked about how much fun it was for two whole weeks. I realized I missed out on something big. In the mid-to-late 1980's I was a subscriber to his Coconut Telegraph newsletter and saw him in concert a few times. Each show was a spectacle and everyone was having a good time. I had bootleg recordings of his shows, including a copy of his first record 'Down to Earth' which sounded very dissimilar to his later style and hits. I completely annoyed my co-workers by playing the entire Buffet collection of albums nearly non-stop.
Several years later I took my girlfriend (now wife) on our first trip together - Key West. Yep, we stopped at the Margaritaville store while there and I loaded up on T-Shirts, frisbees, and other trinkets.
I stayed a fan this whole time. His music will live on thankfully. Making people relax, loosen up and chill out - we need a whole lot more of that.
RIP Jimmy.
My first Coral Reefer Band concert was at San Diego State University in 1985...a bit ironic that his last concert was at SDSU in May 2023.
I read that it was lymphoma...skin cancer that caused his death. Sad to think about him gone....
