Hey everyone, I have an 89 F250 C6 460, I've been slowly fixing this thing and use it as a daily to and from school about 60 miles round trip. Last week was the fan clutch after it seized and sounded like a jet engine. This weekend I went to my girlfriend's place about 15 miles away, and when we went to jump in the truck, it cranked but didn't start. Or even sounded like it started, but just died again after a second. Waited a few hours and it fired right up, but after 12 miles on the highway back home, the truck died at 75mph and I coasted up the off-ramp. The truck did the same thing, only crank and no start until it started a few times, put it in drive and it sputtered forward a few feet to die again. Was told this is an ignition switch issue, possibly coming loose while driving and then shutting the engine off. I have the part ordered and will replace it anyway. What do you think this could be if it isn't the switch? I have fuel and everything, it fired up after a few tries and drove like normal. Not exactly sure what's happening. Thank you for any and all help!
Also, if anyone has any ideas, I put a new fan clutch in and that got rid of the jet engine sound for the most part, but now it comes on and off. What to do?
Historically, these kinds of problems are caused by a failing TFI ignition module mounted on the distributor. They get hot and stop working.
Step 1. Check for engine codes. Here's how. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...aper-clip.html
The starter-fluid test is a great idea. I bet it won't start with starter fluid. My bet is on the TFI ignition module. If you're gunna replace it, try to find a ford or motorcraft brand part. Aftermarket parts are hit-and-miss.
