So just to be clear when I hook up my 2024 F250 to a 10,000lbs. RV I don't have to push a tow/haul button the truck knows you are hooked up to a trailer because yo plugged in thr lights?
If you want to use the features the the tow/haul mode provides, then you have to push the button. If you don’t want those features, then you do not need use tow/haul.
The transmission does not care if you use it or not. It is fine either way.
the truck does not know if you are towing a trailer or not as far as the tow/haul mode. It will not automatically turn on when you plug in your trailer
Yes, selecting the "tow/haul" is ONLY for the small change in transmission programming and is available when you are connected to a trailer or not, at your option, by pressing the button.
The truck "knows" you are connected to the trailer via the 7-way plug and will function the lights/brakes either way.
so by push the tow / haul button what does the transmission do ? I would assume keep it out of "overdrive" . So if I leave it alone I won't burn out the touque convertor becuse the transmission knows its got weight on it . Thanks for the info I have not seen anything on Utube about it
Tow haul mode changes the shift strategy to help with towing.
all forward gears are available and will be used dependent on conditions. Upshift and downshift strategies are changed to hold gears better on grades, and downshifts when stopping provide significantly more engine braking.
the owners manual has a very good explanation of what all it does.
you won’t burn up the transmission whether you use it or not. Especially if you watch your gauges, but from my experiences with towing heavy loads with a super duty, it’s going to be really hard for you to overheat anything.

There is no need to "lock out overdrive" on these transmissions like ones back when we were all young. Use all the gears. As mentioned tow/haul does not lock out any gear.

But you can lock out gears manually if you want, which some guys prefer to do. I'd rather let tow/haul mode do its thing and let er eat.
I very much wish I had the ability to lock out 6th in my expedition, especially when pulling the TT in my sig.
it likes to upshift to 6th on every slight downhill section, then downshift to 4th on every slight incline. If it would just stay in 5th it wouldn't drop below the target speed and have to drop two gears to catch back up.
the f150's got select shift in 2011. the expeditions didn't get it until 2015. can't figure out why, but i do wish i had the ability to control some gears.
