This was also posted in the superduty section. I'm not sure if that is ok. Looking for help.
I use a 1999 F-550 with 7.3 powerstroke as my delivery truck. Been a very reliable truck. with the exception of the alternator (generator) now not charging. I have put 3 different (new) alternators on it with same results.
It has been at a mechanics shop for 4 days and he can't find the issue, but I fear what ever hours he has in will be billed to me, with no results.
As deliveries are my bread and butter, I am desperate to get my truck back on the road.
I know it could be a hundred different things, but can some of you help me start at step one and work from there? Single alternator, dual batteries, (not the ambulance package).
Has anyone checked for a parasitic draw on the charging system? These trucks are starting to get a reputation for them and that extra load on an alternator can cause premature failure.
Edit: One more thing, replace the alternator pigtail. Even if it looks fine, tests fine, whatever just replace it. Buy Motorcraft if possible, the best available if you can't, as long as it isn't Dorman.
Check power at the alternator with the key in run position. Doesn't have to be running. Big lug and the 2 smaller wires should all have 12v on them. Check that first.
the stator on my alternator was shorted to ground, had a 2 amp draw.
replaced the Alternator with a bigger one,
MechMan 320A and trouble is gone.
I made sure all cables are clean, and tight
