Hey All, I've been looking for an original automatic steering column and found this one. I believe it's from a car but seller tells me it is 35 inches in length which is right for my 56 f100. The question is will it work for my truck. I have a picture of a truck with an automatic column and the top is slightly different in that the indicator hump is slightly bigger. At this point I decided to wait for another column. Please advise. Cheers, Rick
When you find the correct colum ( I might have one here) I can supply you with new shift indicator that I'm currently making. Here is a sample. This was my first attempt and they have improved but still not perfect
After you find your 56 Auto column, here is something you will want to inspect and repair to make sure once your steering column is all put together and the truck on the road, it would not accidentally slip itself out of park and into reverse. Especially bad if you are running cold and the carb is on fast idle. And if you don't happen to be in the truck!
It happened to me, only thankfully mine was warm at the time, and the engine was running very slow and rough ,lean , and bouncing around. I was able to get it stopped before it hit something. To me it is indeed a safety issue.
Here is a thread by a fellow who noticed this problem and how he repaired it.

Thanks everybody for all the info. I'll keep searching for the right part. I have plenty of work to do before I need the column. If anybody knows where I can find one please let me know.
Looks pretty good. Please let me know if you have that original automatic steering column. Another guy texted me and said he would check around for one. You can text me at 818 314 4794.
