62 Uni Generator to Alternator Conversion Question
My system isn't charging, so I am thinking I should probably upgrade to a 1 wire alternator. Anyone have recommendations for a good alternator to buy? I have a 62 unibody with a 223 and is there anything else I need besides the alternator?
I have a 3 wire 10SI on my Uni. Gen light works as designed. I currently have the truck apart, going to go with AAW wire loom. I might upgrade to 3G. I have 3G on my 72. Both trucks have electric fans.
If you value the original look, there is a company making a one wire, internally regulated alternator in a generator case. I put one in a 64.5 mustang a couple weeks ago. Of course I can't bring up the name of the company it came from but I can find out when I go to work tomorrow.

…but a one-wire won’t allow a functional “gen” light. A 3-wire will.

I misspoke. It can be run with only one wire but it does have a ground post and a voltmeter post, in the same place that the gen has posts.
I stand corrected.
Powermaster makes an alternator which has the appearance of an original generator. It's a one wire....so to speak. Still needs a good, large gauge ground wire and there's a model that has a post to connect to your generator light on the dash. The model line is called PowerGen. Go to their website for particular model numbers and features. The ones with the suffix ("S", I believe), are those that have the feature for the gen light on the dash. They're much more $ than a generic alternator, but look nice and work well. And advantage, if you have an original generator, it will use the same brackets.

Yes, Powermaster is the one I installed. I was an easy install and worked just fine.
Looks like summit sells them and at the bottom they call out "Ford swing mount designed to fit generator brackets. Has indicator lamp terminal." so sounds like the right one
Wow. I thought about this conversation but think I'll have to postpone. That's pricey, maybe worth it when needed. Last time I bought an alternator, they were about a dollar an amp.
Vintage Auto Garage has a bracket that mounts the alternator using the existing generator bracket for around 60 bucks. You can get rebuilt 60-80 amp Delco alternators for under 100 bucks all day long. The alternator options these guys are talking about are too rich for my blood....Bob

I looked on that site, but wasn't having any luck finding something low cost
The stuff I was finding on vintage auto was around the same prices I was finding on Summit so not sure where you are finding those prices you are referencing. Can you share a link or point us to where you are seeing them?
