Transmission fluid replacement

Hello,

I'm new to the site and have gleaned a ton of good stuff, but I can't seem to find help with tranny service. I've done the 30K service on my 2001 V10 X, but didn't drain the torque convertor when I replaced the filter and tranny fliud. I couldn't seem to understand how to rotate the unit to expose the drain plug under the access cover on the convertor. I would also like to know how to do a complete tranny service correctly. Should I do something beyond the filter change and complete fluid replacement?

Thanks in advance!

easy way to turn it have some one tap the starter. Your realy do not need to drain the convertor. If you wish to, fill your tranny then drive it making sure the convertor locks up. Then recheck the fluid level you will need to add more.
Besides the filter and oil you are doing all you can or should.

Thanks for the reply. I was just concerned in that I only got 6+ quarts out of the Tranny, while the whole assembly uses 18+. It seems as though I'm not really "changing" the fluid if most is still in the convertor.

The big problem w/ oil is it gets contaminated. If you pull a lot heat can start to break down some of the additives but the oil it self does not realy break down. The big thing is to keep it clean and that is what you are doing w/ a new filter.

You do need to drain the torque converter. As you noted almost 2/3 of the total fluid is in there.

I wrote an article explaing how to change all the fluid. It's in the articles section of this site.

You can turn the engine by bumping the starter, or put a socket on the crankshaft pully and turn it. I find turning the engine with a long wrench and socket is easier than trying to align things with the starter.
