I noticed on my 92 Ford f 250 5.8 motor with a automatic tranny with overdrive, about a mth ago after a long trip with the truck what I would call a hard shift between gears. Not severe but not butter smooth as it always done one the past .
‘’it went away and I forgot about it but today it started it again. Shift 1 and 2 instead of silky smooth it’s a tad more abrupt. Definitely different. Harder. Shift 3 I didn’t notice it as bad but the final shift into overdrive at about 40mph more abrupt than previously.
Any concerns or don’t worry about it because it’s a “old truck”
You should run KOEO diagnostic codes to see if a trans code comes up. If all clear 111 or 11 on KOEO, run KOER codes. Did you replace the trans fluid and filter recently?

‘yes I did. Before the trip with synthetic . Spoke to a Ford sealer service mgr before I did it. Truck drove the same for about a mth until I got back from my Long trip than stopped and just today started backup
If you replaced the trans filter, it is a common issue that the orange o ring on the filter neck doesn't come out with the filter and a new filter with o ring is installed over it. . The other issue is if the filter wasn't installed properly i.e. double o ring etc. the filter neck falls out and the filter is disabled. Were your codes run in KOEO with the motor at operating temp when tested?

Transmission problems can vary. The filter falling out of place can cause the issues you experience plus others. Running KOEO codes with a reader is easy and very informative. This is the reader most of the forum uses. You won't get a code for the filter falling out but if other issues are present the reader would identify them. If no codes Check the filter if it was replaced.
I was experiencing a similar issue a real hot humid day with my 94, what I realized it was only happening if I did a slow acceleration. If I step on it abit, it's fine. So, until it happens again, it's business as usual. My truck is basically a cruise night toy now , with the occasional dump run .

found out by the shop, they didn’t replace the filter or drop the pan. Just did a flush
Were they able to run codes? Pulling the pan is no fun. The common filter dropping in the pan is usually when fluid and filter have been changed. Your call on that.

‘they ran codes and something about neutral switch not reading and tps sensor. So I’m dropping the pan and getting a new filter and replacing both sensors and obviously a new pan gasket.
Ok, didn’t think about this, but when I put gauges in I didn’t hook uo the OEM, and the tech said it created a small issue but he replaced two sensors, one on the tranny and one near the pcm.
Bottom line shifts like butter again and the tech said that he thinks my computer the EEC is probably on its way out
