96 f250 7.3 with a zf5 I bought as a project truck. Truck has a white smoke issue that tends to get a little better once it warms up but still there when I step on it. Truck idles a little rough and when coming to a stop pushing the clutch in it lugs down and sometimes will catch itself, shoot the rpm’s back up and idle fine. Other times it will completely die on me. Not sure if that’s related to the issue at hand or not but I’m not getting any codes other then a buzz test throwing p1272/p1274. Ohm’d the uvch all 4 connectors were good, ohm’d from the idm through the harness and everything ohm’d out good there. I then swapped injector 4 for 6 and still the same codes. Pulled the wiring apart and found the wires torn up in the picture. Fixed the wiring and started the truck and still same codes and white smoke/rough idle. The oil coming from the deflectors from 2 and 4 look weak compared 6 and 8, but as I mentioned I swapped 4 for 6. Not to sure where to go from here.
first post on here!
Any feedback/suggestions would be appreciated!
Leaking/malfuncting fuel injectors
Bad control of injectors (wiring, IDM/PCM)
Burning oil
Low compression
I'd start with checking compression. No reason to replace injectors if your engine doesn't have good compression. Your IDM and PCM can be tested by dieseltechchatt.com
After compression is proven good/bad, and depending on how your truck was maintained in its previous life, be prepared to replace a lot of stuff. Basically my theory on a 30 year old truck is... Just about everything needs to be replaced. I could give you a list of stuff I have replaced but pretty much if you name it its been replaced. Now my rear wheel cylinder is leaking and my Dana 50 pumpkin is leaking.
start engine, take off oil cap and place upside down on spout
does it float or jump a bit with your misses?
@1k RPM does it float or blow off
2k and 3k RPM test as well
i would take the whole wiring loom apart looking for breaks, pull on each wire hard too
the broken bare ground wire helps suppress inductive noise and that wire needs to be there along with the foil from IDM to injector end
Been super busy lately with work but got some time to look at the truck. Went to do a compression test and it failed as I didn’t warm the truck up enough and then found a fuel leak I needed to fix before driving it. As I said before I swapped injector 4 for 6. So while I had the valve cover off I decided to swap them back and look the injectors over again. Upon removal injector 2 and 4 had rough spots on the copper crush washer on the nozzle of both injectors. When I pulled out the number 6 injector out of spot number 4 I found a paste/grease covered in the end of the injector.
If not that's most likely fuel from injection getting into coolant from bad washer on tip.
those orings are worn too, that injector has been loose for a while
Sorry again been super busy. Ran a contribution test and got po266 for cylinder 2. Ran a compression test and it checked out. Ordered a new injector and swapped it in and still tons of white smoke. Ran for codes again and truck passed buzz test, contribution test, and any other test I threw at it. Converted the truck to e fuel so I pulled the filters to check for oil from possible bad o rings and there’s no oil. Replaced the water pump awhile ago and there was nothing mixed with the old coolant and still nothing mixed with the new coolant. I tried unplugging the injectors one by one and they all seem to be firing. The only thing that I have found is oil on the underside of the turbo outlet and a little bit of oil in the down pipe. I started the truck with the down pipe off and every couple seconds there’s white smoke that puffs out pretty hard. Not sure where to go from here considering I’m getting no codes. The only thing I can think of is possibly missing or bad copper washers on injectors.

member on here had a cracked head at the injector port under the cup and smoked bad
not loosing coolant and fuel seems to be going down accurately. Haven’t really smelled it but will in a little bit. Really hope it’s not a cracked head lol
