Clutch not disengaging

Hi all,
I have recently changed my throw out bearing on my 78 f250 4x4 400 4spd manual because it was bad and I thought it was the reason the clutch wasn’t disengaging. Well it was destructed and it tore apart the input shaft housing I thought my clutch looked fine. I’ve played with the adjuster rod on the clutch fork I’ve tightened it up and loosend it off and found there’s a sweet spot where 1 inch from bottom of the pedal stroke it will disengage. But if u press any more it won’t disengage as it grinds the gear when u want to put it into 1st. And vice versa with not pressing enough.

thanks for all the awnsers in advance as I don’t want to pull my motor for the 4th time 😂

Did you replace the pressure plate and input shaft housing? The throwout bearing collar has to have the tube to guide it.

I did long ago have a Dodge three finger clutch where one finger broke or messed up (so that only two were actually working, causing the throw-out bearing to want to wobble) ... a new clutch package fixed it (I caught it before the big wreck, it happened near home so I drove home shifting clutchless), it broke the guide tube loose too but they were kept in stock at the dealer then. Was 50 years ago.

It's fairly common to get a throw out bearing that works, sort of. if it's not the correct length from the face of the bearing to the groove the fork rides in you'll have problems. sometimes you can adjust it out, sometimes you can't.

So you figure it’s the wrong throw out bearing?

Was it a three finger or was it a diaphragm pressure plate?

What do you rekon caused that tube to break?

it was a diaphragm pressure plate and I’m not sure why Input shaft housing would even break

Bad or no pilot bushing would make the input shaft move all over the place.
Are you sure the fork is seated on the pivot right?

It's called a bearing retainer. a totally shot pilot bushing could conceivably break it , do it but so could a seized throw-out bearing.

I can't say your bearing is wrong because I don't know what you have, but it could be wrong and that would cause your problem. be sure your fork is positioned on the pivot correctly also.

A pilot bearing can cause this, if the pilot bearing grabs the input shaft of trans, well, the pilot grabs the input shaft and tries to drive you through the stop sign. clutch or no clutch, just food for thought.

Found culprit

Took engine out and found one finger on the diaphragm clutch is bent up and found my pilot bearing popped out of the hole with no effort and found a missing bolt in my clutch so I’m thinkin the bolt came out and cad used all this damage. Also my brand new throw out bearing is ****ed and I haven’t even put 100km on my engine with the new clutch so I’m bummed about that but what do ya do I guess🤷‍♂️

That was quick work ... but necessary none the less. Glad you found it. For what it's worth, once fixed, they tend to last.
