Hey guys, I finally got a new truck 🥳, (don't worry, I ain't abandoning the ol diesel) and it has a check engine light that comes on sometimes, it's a 1991 f150 with a 5.0 and a m5od transmission (both rebuilt) it runs and drives great, I just wanted to know what y'all's suggestions for a cheap code reader is, so I can scan and reset it without having to go anywhere. Also so I can replace whatever it may need.
This is the code reader most of us on the Forum use. The extension cord you can buy separate is a nice accessory to have and allows you to sit in the cab while running codes and the few things you need to do to properly run codes like press the brake at a certain time etc. Here is the manual for the reader that you can review and see what you think before you order. Local big box parts stores may have this reader for sale or can get it for you if you want to shop price.

Sweet! That should work great, quick question, if the CEL comes on when accelerating in slightly too high a gear, but not at idle, would the reader still "see" it?

Yes the reader has a Memory code function that will display codes that have appeared and were active at some point BUT are not currently active. I am having trouble loading the manual for you. If I can't get it to come up Google the Innova 3145 Instruction manual. THE LINK BELOW IS WORKING
