Hey guys, just wondering, what would be the first things you'd do to a 460 EFI w/ a C6. I have a 1989 f250 and am looking to wake this thing up a bit. I just did a new fan clutch, as it was roaring really loud and already being slow when giving it gas. What are the first upgrades you'd do to it to make it a bit more powerful, and what would I need to do to do so? This is my first truck, I am a teen looking to learn more about cars and make this a really nice first truck with my dad. Thank you for all of your help.
Congratulations on your truck. I Understand about wanting to wake up the 460. You are only limited by your budget. Most of the folks on this forum are here to keep their trucks running and operating in a reliable fashion. Making the 460 run better on a budget is proper regular maintenance and using quality Motorcraft parts and not off brand parts. That in itself is a task that helps you understand the basics of maintaining your truck. If this appeals to you then lurk here or get involved in reading the threads for a wealth of information.
If you want to build an upgraded engine here is a forum for the 460 engine and what it takes to slightly modify or go full race mods. Check them out if you like. https://www.460ford.com/
Regardless of what you do, hope to see you around and I hope you end up with what you want.

Thanks for being so cool! I'm planning on some minor stuff, everything maintenance and replacement with old parts, plugs, coil, emmissions and cat delete. Just replaced the fan clutch today after it seized and sounded like a jet engine.. scary! Would you have any suggestions on what should be done asap? Thank you so much!

I just sent a member the info on a code reader that most of us use on this forum. The reader will identify problems if they exist. It will give you codes that are issues and there is a list of possible causes for the code. From there I would get a Haynes manual for our year trucks of this forum 1987-1996. This will tell you what you need to know about what to do when you have codes and usually how to test them. Of course you can come on the forum and get help on what to do and how to do it if needed. Look at the thread " code reader suggestions"
When I got my two 460 trucks, I had no previous maintenance records. I wanted to make sure I did everything that should have been done to the truck according to mileage, condition etc.
I installed new properly gaped Motorcraft COPPER plugs and plug wires.. (inside fender well covers removed helps on getting to several hard to reach plugs. Everything Mororcraft. New distributor cap and rotor. Change oil and oil filter, change trans fluid and filter. Service coolant system with fresh coolant and thermostat 195 degree. Change differential fluid and gasket. Repair or replace any damaged vacuum lines. Check timing for 10 degrees BTDC. remove the spout when you time it. You can read about some of these procedures or ask questions on the forum for additional helpful information. Having the Haynes manual helps some also
High flow cat (or none) and a good muffler is a good place to start. Stock airbox flows fine. 1993+ seem to have received better heads. I am not sure what changed, but I am sure 460EFI guys can tell you.
Agreed with correct timing and even a fresh timing chain is a good idea as they become sloppy with age. I have no idea if the stock camshaft is any good or not.
