He did keep it in 10th with 3.73s on a slight incline which he found impressive with 14k behind the truck. He was also impressed with the gaser not screaming at 5k rpm like so many that have no experience with the 7.3 claim. I know I see 10th a lot on the freeway with 14k behind my 7.3/4/30, and that's a 13ft tall wind sail of a toyhauler..I also disagree with him about putting the foot to the floor. I've never had to do that even when wanting to get up to speed faster.
That was a pretty good comparison, even with his bias towards diesel being a diesel mechanic. Too bad it was a 3.73 though, since that handicapped the 7.3 a bit on those "foot to the floor" tests. Nothing shocking overall. I do find it amusing how guys get so scared of RPMs climbing, when the engine is built with that intention. Seems like a waste of power to have a diesel and never see it downshift to use more of its potential.
He must've been reading the lifter failure thread......regurgitating internet assumptions.
Just another person trying to make it on salestube. I chuckled at some of his other videos where he just gave out wrong information and went off on non-factual rants in which who knows where he sourced from. Being a mechanic doesn't make one an engineer...
That trailer with low drag is one thing...Try that with a tall fifth wheel.
I do. I dont ever have to floor it. These trucks make plenty of power to haul any tandem axle RV trailer made up any hill in America. I can pass people without having to floor it. Force a downshift to 4th or 3rd and go.
I think "flooring it" is just an over dramatic attempt to accelerate hard. With these drive by wire trucks, they will interpret "x" increase in pedal advance as maximum, and any additional pedal push can't increase that.
Being in the appropriate gear at the appropriate time alleviates the need to mash the pedal all the way down unless your towing well in excess of what Ford rates the powertrain at. I hardly ever used more than half throttle with an 11.3k trailer and 21k machine behind my F550. 4.88 gearing helped but using the gear lockout to get in and stay in gear when needed works wonders over letting the automatic mode make the shift due to throttle input which is always too late.
I tow roughly 13k behind my 6.2L/6R100 with 3.73 gears and I just hang out in 4th gear while pulling a grade on the interstate @60mph. Keep my foot at 1/3 throttle and if needed drop to 3rd by locking out 4th. My right foot doesnt move until I crest the hill and add 5th and 6th gear back.
