7.3 Gas Engine???

Has anyone heard of the Super Duty getting a 7.3 Gasoline engine? I heard rumor at the SEMA show, but wondered if anyone else has heard anything. Thanks.

Someone is either yanking your chain, or is really confused.

There is talk about the 6.2L being punched out a bit as a replacement for the V10, and there is information in the UAW talks about a new displacement for Super Duty trucks. I don't recall specific engine sizes though.

I agree with Ace of Spades. Ford has a 6.2 now and if anything they will go smaller rather than larger for fuel economy reasons. They are getting more power out of 4 cylinders now than they did from big block V8's in the 1980's.

The info was actually from a Ford Rep. I was asking about the possibility of an ecoboost (Maybe a 5.0L) in the Super Duty and he said there was no chance of that happening, but that a 7.3 gas engine was being developed for the Super Duty. I can't imagine he was yanking my chain, but I have searched high and low on the internet and haven't seen anything about it. May something to watch for.....

A 444 cubic inch gas engine, combined with todays technology would be a absolute beast of a gas engine that could give the Powerstroke a run for its money, and without all the inconveniences of a diesel. Its certainly interesting news.

Literally everyone I know that's buying a new truck that I've talked to lately brings up the Fiat/Ram 6.4, very few actually buy one but express increased interest and regret after buying their vehicle Gas or Diesel. If Ford can build a bigger gas engine and comply with the emission regulations I think there would be a market for it unless something changes with the current economy.

The the 6.7 Diesel is impressive but not an engine that would like how I'd use it and the 6.2 is good but isn't enough better than my old 06 V10 to give me any interest in trading trucks... 6.2 plus 2 more cylinders equals 7.75, lower the compression ratio for emissions and you
have 7.3L, a Big block V-8 would be pretty cool also. i'm not holding my breath for a bigger engine or an EB in the Super duty...

I read a month or so back that the money invested at the Ford gas engine plants, was also for design of the 4.8(likely direct injection) V8 for F150 and a 7.0L for SD. Both were supposed to offer mpg gains along with power.

I've always been interested in the 6.4, but what regret are you talking about? The fact they bought 6.2/6.7 instead?

That's the same thing I've seen. If they could get a 7.0 in the 400hp/500tq range and get 6.2 mpg numbers I think they would be the hot ticket. I'd be all over it.

Since I've retired from owning diesels, I'm all in on new gas engine improvements, especially non-turbo'd.

I've been waiting to see the 7.3 "rumor" hit the net. From what I understand- yes it's true AND don't be surprised if there are pushrods...

I prefer push rods. You can get more power in a more compact footprint.

Mostly it's guys that dropped a lot of money on a diesel that didn't really need it and spent a lot of money on upkeep and repairs, a few went with a Ram 5.7 or GM 6.0(or is it a 6.2 now?) and wish they had slightly more truck. There actually aren't many Ford 6.2s in my neighborhood so I can't comment on them but in general a gas engine with more low end torque would be appreciated.
