The below attached video was taken on a warm engine, shot right below the harmonic balancer. The belt was disconnected for this video, so it's not any of the accessories or the fan causing the noise.
You should be able to hear a pretty clear intermittent metallic tick in the first half of the video. It speeds up with engine speed.
It's especially clear between the 5-7 and 17-23 second mark in the video, and completely disappears after 35 seconds.
I don’t really know if pinging can sound like that but is it pinging from incorrect ignition timing? Is it specifically making the sound by the balancer?
I’m no expert so I’m just guessing what it could be.
I believe the timing to be set correctly at 10 degrees BTDC. I had a timing light on it recently and it was set right. Considering timing is set right, is there a good way I could rule out pinging? Retard timing and see if it persists?
It's hard for me to say where the noise comes from since it is so intermittent. I took this video to check something else and just so happened to capture that sound. It happens very randomly.
Possibly. Mine ticks from an exhaust leak, a way I learned from a Chris fix video to check an exhaust leak is put a sho vac in the exhaust, and reverse the direction. And then you can spray soapy water on it and see if it bubbles anywhere I’d assume you have to tape it at the end where you put the shop vac in.
I’m not sure if it’ll work, but to rule out timing chain use a stethoscope and put it on the timing cover in a few spots and listen for that tick. If it’s not there maybe move onto other places like valve covers, oil pan, and see where the noise is from. Someone here with more experience will have to verify if you can do that, I’ve only used a stethoscope 2 times so I don’t know if it’ll work like that. Shouldn’t be to hard to do since you have all of the pulleys disconnected from the crank.
It'll be a while before I can get to my truck to test more stuff and I will update you then. The problem with this is that the noise very rarely ever happens. When it does happen again I'll get a video from the top.
I just don't know how to explain the intermittent nature of the sound with some of the suggested issues (rocker arm, timing chain).
Admittedly I shouldn't have revved it this hard. The noise rarely ever happens and I was getting desparate to know what it was, hence the revving. If it would have broke something completely, at least I would have known what it was then.
I am having the exact same problem with my 351 right now, I just replaced my harmonic balancer today with no avail. My noise used to be rare and then it started getting progressively worse until this week its all you can hear on startup but it does go away, if I find anything I will let you know, I believe harbor freight has a stethoscope for 6$, I picked one up to help me diagnose the same sound.
Impossible to tell from a video. That sound could be from many sources. A stethoscope can help determine if it is internal to the engine. I would also look around for heat shields and hardlines that are moving with engine vibration and making intermittent contact.
