Hey y'all,
Just got done installing a ZF-5 in my '87 F250. Go to crank it to check it all out and, nothing. Glow plugs click, gauges work, lights work, so I know I have power. Thought to myself, maybe its the clutch safety switch. Threw a fuse in the connector to bypass it, still nothing; fuse stayed intact. Ok, maybe its the solenoid, but I don't here it clicking. I jump the ignition from the solenoid and she starts right up.
ok. next step. crawl under the dash and look at the ignition switch on top of the column, about above the brake pedal. it has to be tight between metal and plastic parts.:
with age, they separate and cause all kinds of ignition issues, especially no start.
also, there is the ignition actuator in top of the column behind the steering wheel. when they break 99% of the time it is in the no start position.
when turning key to start, you should feel some resistance and it should spring back to run when released.
if it does not, than the actuator is most likely broken.
