Hello,
Recently I drove my 88 f250 from Sacramento to Oregon(700 miles total). The only issue I noticed was once I got up there the truck might stall if I tap the throttle or if I hold the brake to be moving slow(7mph and under). Thought nothing of it and drove it back with no problems. This morning I started the truck and it was bogging low for a couple seconds then picked itself back up. Driving down the road, when I let off the throttle and put on the brake normally it would consistently stall, same if I tapped the throttle. Now to avoid stalling I have to apply the brake real slow almost as if I’m braking with a heavy load. I’m not sure what this issue could be but my initial thoughts were fuel pump or injectors.
Sounds like your governor is sticking. If your fuel filter is old, replace the filter and fill the new filter with diesel kleen before screwing it to the engine. Start the engine and let it idle for 60 seconds and then shut it off and let it sit there overnight. The next morning, start the engine, drive it around and see if it has improved.
I have never changed my fuel filter, and considering how the truck was when I got it I’m sure the po never did either. My friend told me where the filter is on his but it didn’t match up on mine so I didn’t bother to keep looking. Where is it?
on your 88, it is on the passenger front of the engine over the valve cover.
you can see it in this picture, lower left of the picture with the valve stem thing sticking out of the side.
the one pictured is a napa one piece unit. i prefer that over the two piece with screw on water separator.
I always thought that unit was strictly a water separator. Turns out I have changed that before, almost a year ago actually. Mine has a cap that screws into the bottom with a drain pipe and an electric connection
the bottom is the water separator. the top is the filter.
i tossed the lower metal part in the garbage after the second filter change when the gasket started leaking.
