Greetings friends, it’s been a while. Temps here in DC are 100plus. Had to drive the truck yesterday and after about 30 minutes the temp gauge went close to high and went over the high to the extreme high and she stopped. Luckily she was very close to a parking space. Opened the hood and the radiator cap had popped off and coolant was around the engine bay. I closed her up and made my way home feeling like I should let her completely cool down overnight. Roll on today and a few minutes ago. Put some coolant in. She took the whole gallon. She is still in the very high range on the gauge. The fans are working btw. What do you think it is? My thanks as always for your collective help and advice. BF
T'stat is stuck closed(?)
Why did the cap pop off the radiator?
Might time for a new cap.
Next time the engines cool, remove the radiator cap and start the engine. Watch the coolant as the engine warms up, see if you have coolant flowing when the temp gauge gets a little bit over half way, at that point the T'stat should open and water flow.
Let us know if you had to add coolant before you started the engine.
You also said, "The fans are working" You have more than one fan on the front of the engine ?
No way the cap popped off unless it was not installed properly or it doesn't fit the radiator properly. You certainly will overheat if it comes off and you lose a bunch of coolant.

Sorry, I'm kind of a stickler for detail.
Yea what is this FANS thing about?
Dont tell us you are running electric fans and now it over heats.
I am going to guess you will need to add coolant before start up because it got pushed out when it ran hot.
When letting it run to see if the stat opens and you have flow you may need to add more coolant as it "burps" any air in the system out.
