I just took off my passeneger side valve cover so I can replace my followers hoping to eliminate the noise. Concerning the timing chain, if the chain or tensioner is worn, would I be able to feel play in the chain? At 220k, I think it looks pretty clean inside, am I right?
Wow that's very clean for those miles. As far as tension you don't have any oil pressure on tensioners so no you can't tell .
You should tell us how you kept that engine clean . Mine has lots of varnish when I opened it up at 130k .
I'm in florida so lots of heat from the hwy , now at 259k .
Your original engine has a poor oil pump , lousy plastic tensioners that blow out their seals .
Changing followers is good business the newer ones are improved , I threw one to the side at 130k .
Your chain will stretch also making it hard to take up the slack , if it starts whipping it will destroy guides . Its a good idea to pull oil pan and check for broken guide pieces and jammed /blocked oil pickup . If guides broken you need a timing job .
When I did tensioners and guides, the driver bank retained pressure for hours and chain was tight. The passenger had destroyed guides and a loose chain that could be felt on the inboard side of chain run.
So, when compressing one of the valve springs the spring went down but the valve stayed up, this caused the valve keepers to fall off. I put a small vise-grip on the valve to prevent it from falling down. I've been looking for the air hose that screws into the spark plug hole to keep the valve up so I can replace the keepers. Problem is that I can not find the 16mm adapter hose, I see 12 and 14mm but no 16mm, can anyone guide me in the right direction?
