2000 B2500 noisey power steering pump. I decided to replace the pump. Now I have a replacement just as noisy with a new problem. The steering shudders when the wheel is turned. I have turned the steering wheel 100 times to remove air from the system. It sounds like I can hear fluid going through the system when I sit on the floor and turn the wheel by hand. What next?
The various aftermarket replacement parts suppliers have been in a race with each other....to the bottom of the barrel. This is especially true of Ford power steering pumps. My WAG here is that you purchased a replacement from a national chain. Am I correct?
One of the first "problems" when replacing a power steering pump is the initial startup usually creates a bunch of foam in the system. This will cause howl. That usually fixes itself after setting overnight and the air rises to the top. Also, what fluid did you use? Using the recommended fluid is also important. There are also magic "elixirs in a can" But I"m not going to recommend one. Sometimes they work, other times, not. IMO, the biggest problem is the aftermarket rebuilders. They sell replacement power steering pumps on a price point and it's always selling them at the cheapest price possible. Most of them are not rebuilt properly.
You're going to cringe at this suggestion, but see if you can get a genuine Motorcraft rebuilt pump. There used to be a pamphlet inside the box of a Motorcraft replacement power steering pump that says why their pumps are rebuilt properly and why the aftermarket pumps usually howl. I wish I'd saved one of those pamphlets, but I didn't.
I have same issue with wifes 01 accord. Had the rack and pinion replaced a couple years ago and then had the issue. replaced pump, still remained looked into the resevoir and it was pumping at a high rate, got another pump ant it went away. Anyhow last month or so the drive belt broke so had it replaced, now the issue has returned. I saw someone asked about a pressure switch and it has one. I dont know what it does but will try to R&R to see if it works. Anyone know the purpose of the switch on the steering system??
look and see if there is one listed for your vehicle.
UPDATE: problem cured. I bought a hand vacuum pump to get the air out of the system. Went through the process 3 times. Started the truck, quiet pump but still had the shudder when I turned the wheel. I drove around the block and it seemed to get better so I took it for a longer drive. When I returned all is well. Yes Kruse it came from NAPA. I considered Motorcraft but they have terrible reviews. I usually have pretty good luck with NAPA parts but I realize their all made in the same place Thanks for the reply everyone!!!
Slabhunter, glad it is fixed! One of the initial problems that a lot of "do-it-yourselfers" have with a power steering pump is the initial startup after a replacement. The reservoir is full, but suddenly it isn't and it sucks air which creates foam. Then you get the whine. As you found out, your hand vacuum pump can really help. Another item that I've seen another tech use is a variable speed motor and a belt that was robbed from a sewing machine. The tech set it up to gently spin the power steering pump BEFORE the belt is installed and before the initial engine startup. The front wheels are still off the ground and the steering wheel is gently moved back and forth to get the air out. I wouldn't say it works on every application, but for a redneck tool, it worked fine.
