power steering problem

power steering problem

i have a 88 bronco 302 5 speed and the power steering doesnt seem to be working. it seems like its working a little bit but when i put power steering fluid in it now it squeals alot when a turn the wheel. and doesnt seem to get much better. any ideas, they guy who had it b4 me said he just replaced the pump

It sounds like you have air in the system. Jack the front wheels off the ground, fill the pump with fluid, start engine and slowly turn the steering all the way in one direction, then turn the wheel all the way in the other direction. Continue this until you stop seeing bubbles in the power steering pump resovoir. The pump should quiet down as the air is pushed out of the system. It took me about twenty minutes of turning the steering wheel back and forth to get the air out. Now my pump is quiet again.

would that cause it not to work normally, its still really stiff...

and when i put p/s fluid in the resevior and i turn on the truck, when i check back there isnt iny in there any more, there isnt a leak that i can tell. any ideas?

When did the problem start?

If you just bought the truck and the PO said the pump was just repalced.....then chances there is air in the line, and you will need to do the turning of the wheel deal to get it out.
If you have had the truck for a while, and it just started acting up, then there is another problem. If you keep adding fluid and the reservoir is still low after some time, it HAS to be leaking out onto the ground or under carrage.....there is no other place for it to go????

If the pump was just replaced but not properly bled, the lack of fluid will have cavitated the pump creating permanent damage to the impeller and/or the pump housing itself. Sounds like the pump was replaced and filled but not bled. after a short while the fluid that WAS in it would have been pulled into the system but there would not have been enough to keep the system working properly and the air sucked into the system caused the cavitation. If the pump cavitated long enough, it will not be capable of producing enough pressure to properly assist the steering of the truck even if the pump is drained and then properly filled and bled.
