did the wrong oil cause damage?

so i have a 92 7.3 and usually I change my own oil but i was busy and had a shop do it. they had put straight 40 weight in it instead of 15w 40. i have now drained it out and put 15w 40 back in. but I drove about 60 miles before i decided something was wrong as the CDR on the intake was letting the thinner oil into the intake an making the truck smoke. a lot

i dont think so. as long as you had oil pressure and it was not freezing temps you should be fine.
as straight 40 is thicker, not thinner.

Agree with TJC. I doubt it caused any trouble, does it sound okay at idle and still run like before? If the cdr was letting oil by, the cdr could be bad or they overfilled it with oil; I’d guess the latter as they couldn’t even get the right viscosity.

An extreme overfill could cause a runaway, a member on Oilburners had issues with this awhile back.
