Ok guys...I have been driving Lemmy, my green 73 F100 with a 390 in it all around town lately--having loads of fun.
When I get on the gas, I have blue-grey smoke coming out; when I'm driving light, no smoke at all. A few days ago I checked the oil level and it was down a couple of quarts.
I'm currently running Shell Rotella T 15W-40 oil and Lucas Oil Treatment, as suggested by my father. It didn't use any oil for about 1000 miles, but at about 1200 miles on this oil change, it started going through it. I have ran straight grade Rotella T 40 weight oil in it before and didn't have much of an issue with oil consumption, but it did eat a tiny bit of it up.
I've heard that using CD-2 Stop Leak in these trucks is not a bad idea, but I'm wary of any additives (even the Lucas that my father suggested). I'm sure the rings are worn, and it could use a rebuild, but does anyone have any suggestions or experience with CD-2 Stop Leak?
I have not. I do not have a compression gauge...I spoke with my mechanic about getting the compression checked, and in my opinion, he wants too much to do a simple check. I'll be getting a gauge soon, but do not have one for now.
You may have sucked an intake gasket, a tell tale sign is to pull the valve covers and take note of the oil puddles, there should be puddles of oil between ports.
If you have a void in one area between ports, without oil, you're sucking oil in from valve train, it will suck oil from the valve gallery into the ports.
So there should always be oil puddles between ports, right where intake meets head.
