Front Axle Dust Seals, Inner and outer

Hello Guys and gals,

I'm in florida so I'm taking a rain break,,

I changed the ball joint a few weeks ago and while I was doing that I decided I didn't like the dust shileds on the axle, wish I would have known that then. I'm also changing out the hubs now to, I didn't like those either.

So I have the axle out. And I noticed, I don't think I see an Inner dust shield. Would that be a common issue??

Also, The O rings seen in the pics spicer part number 41784-2, Where do those go?? There is a total of 4, 2 in each package.

Any recommendations while I'm in here? (the truck). I looked down the axle tube and the seals down at the front diff look good and in place. I will be changing the front diff fluid after this project...

Thanks again in advance.

Jeff

It's one big o ring just folded up to look like 2. Goes around the lip of the unit bearing where it goes into knuckle.

OMG (palm on forehead). Yes I see that now. I know exactly where that would go but a new one came with the new HUB. I really thought that was two smaller orings...
Thanks T Payne

Clean the area well and give it some grease so it installs smoothly. If it fails your ESOF won't work.

The inner axle dust shield is a common issue. The original one had a tendency to separate and be a hula hoop on the axle. It is a pain to get to (and not worth the effort for just the inner dust seal) so many cut it off and go about their day.

The newer version of the dust shield is a much better design and does not have that tendency to split into two. It was some time before that newer version came out (although that was many years ago now) so some never replaced their inner dust shield because it was almost useless (split in a short amount of time), even if they had the front end torn down.

oh wow.. good to know.. makes sense.. there is another seal inside the axle tube closer to the diff, with normal fluid maintenance, I can see how that inner seal is not needed..
thanks for that.. now I know if it's not there in the future I won't worry about it..
