Radar Detectors
I have a BEL, unsure which model, works good as long as your paying attention to it and the road.
Type in radar detectors in google and you will find many dealers and tests. Amazon sells alot and the customer reviews are good too.

I have had a Valentine for about 10 years. Got it upgraded (actually they replaced it) by the factory 2 years ago. I believe its the best, but it's pricey. It seems likely that somebody would have copied any important features by now, but if you want to be sure, I would highly recommend it!
This is a fun one. First of all if you plan on traveling much I would pick one like the K40. its all hidden and if pulled over you dont have to worry about the local laws. Only problem is that this one is pricey. Besides that most of them are good. I kind of like the PNI RX5010. It does give both radar and laser protection and is quite a bit cheaper. Just a couple of ideas.

Have any of you tried hard wiring your windshield radar detectors to the overhead console to keep from having the dc cord plug into the cigarette plug?

Jim: How would I do that with my existing overhead console? How is it removed & where would be the best place to connect it to? An existing wire? or run a separate wire to the console?
Thanks.

I have the Valentine hooked up to the overhead console in my F150. The Valentine uses a telephone type (RJ12?) plug-in, so it's easy to wire. It's on whenever the compass/temp display is on. I don't normally like to add new load to existing circuits, but the detector draws very little current; it's been no problem.
As I recall, there was an obvious screw or two, and then the console snapped down. I always use a pry tool for that kind of thing. Maybe somebody who does it regularly will chime in. I'm sure you don't want to break anything!

Vino, I sued the dome light and just pigtailed off of it to the new receptical. Works good. If you are going to run anything more I would probably use the dome light with a relay and run a seperate power wire up into the cab.
