I'm putting a 351w out of a manual truck into one with automatic, I vaguely remember hearing that i would need a spacer between the crank and the flexplate. But I haven't found decisive evidence too prove that or to tell me any particulars about what the spacer needs to do
Are you talking about the metal plate you put on the motor then the flywheel / flex plate before putting the trans / bell housing in place?
If so you need this plate as it locates the starter.
I also believe the plates are different between auto & manual trans as are the starters.
My truck with 300 six did not have this plate when I go it and had to find one.
First one did not fit the bell housing, dont know what it was to?
Second one never made it to my house. It was put between card board and the ends tapped up and the plate cut thru the tap and got lost in shipping.
I did et one and it has been working for 4+ years now.

No i meant a little spacer for between the crankshaft and the flexplate the bolts will go through it but thanks for pointing out about the auto vs manual difference I'll look into it
I have never seen a spacer between crank & flex but have seen a washer type deal that fits over the flex plate that the bolt go thru.
It spreads out the bolt head load to this washer deal so the bolt heads dont cut into the flex plate.

You can buy the spacers in a kit, and stack them behind the flexplate or flywheel to get clearance required for the starter. If the starter works ok, I would not use any.

What dose that do to the converter and front pump as it gets pushed back into the trans?

The shims are very thin. There is plenty of room for them, when you put the trans and tranny together you have to pull the torque convertor forward to engage the flexplate. But I myself have never needed to use them.
