I know this is an engine site but I have tried the trannie site for days and no one can answer my question which should be easy. I am trying to reinstall the auto trannie back into a $#%^ Aerostar and want to know where the "spacer" goes that for the converter install. When we took the trannie out we found the spacer on the converter side of the flywheel. The reason we took the trannie out was the fltwheel teeth has been stripped in several areas and has been tearing over a period of this with 2 starters going by the wayside also. So thinking about it should this spacer been installed "between" the crank and flywheel and not mounted on the converter side of the flywheel. This may be the culprit to damaging the flywheel teeth?? The trannie was rebuilt by a shop 2 years ago and has been slowly tearing starters up and finally this flywheel. If you know where it goes please respond for we are ready to reinstall the trannie.
Thanks
I have absolutely no idea what spacer you're talking about, but whenever I get stuck, I'm not above dropping by the dealer's service counter and asking for a bit of advice. They've always been more than happy to have a tech come up and set me straight. You might give them a try. Good luck!
I *think* the 'spacer' is actually a reinforcement plate used to stiffen the flex plate where it is bolted to the crankshaft. I don't think that it is actually a spacer. Being ignorant, I would ask at the dealer also, or look in the shop manual. When I did an A*star trans, I didn't take the flex plate down, so actually don't know... but the flex plate reinforcers are a very common critter.
