Many options. 6 banger, FE, 460, small block. what do you want ?
not too picky really. Whatever there’s plenty of for relatively cheap lol currently has a 360 but it’s locked up so just going to see what all the options were. I know the f100s had 302s in them. Do you think that would be sufficient, don’t plan on using it for actual truck things more street use than anything else.
x2 on the fe if you go to a 460 platform it will be additional work to swap to 460 auto or 460 type bellhousing as well as clutch and so on if manual and if small block, compatible bellhousing mainly. direct fit would be fe but if a donor truck was found, could get all necessary swap parts. most of the time the bigger 460 seems to be better suited with the larger radiator, depending on what radiator you have now. I am sure that will open a can of worms, that the standard rad will adequately cool a 460, even though factory spec is for the larger 4 core.
Stick with the style of engine you have if your trying to save a little. No drama with all the little things. Cheap, out of the question. Any of the engines that came in dent's are thinking about social security. Just because it's cheap and has been in a barn for 25 years doesn't mean it's problem free. Just try to find a good local shop.
If you want more performance than your 360 turn it into a 390 with some compression and a 4v and you have a great engine. if you just want a budget built the rebuild your 360. none of the other engines are any better than your FE.
Well, I found a good deal on a 460 and C6 combo and pulled the trigger so I guess that’s the route I’m going to go lol. Came out of a 76 Lincoln town car and has power steering AC and everything already bolted to it. not sure the position of the accessories is going to work with my truck though. Any suggestions on a good accessory mounting kit that would work with my truck would like to keep ac and power steering if it all possible

Sounds like a swap that many would be interested in following. Please use plenty of pictures as you work your way through this and post your progress here.
One thing you'll need to source right away is a pair of the brackets that connect the frame front crossmember to the motor mounts. They look similar to the 360 brackets but are substantially different. After that, the transmission crossmember may need to be relocated. Not sure but seem to recall that the tail shaft on the Lincoln 460/C6 is longer than the 360/C6 which may also require a shorter drive shaft. Good luck with this.
Even a bone stock 460 will wake your truck right up compared to the stock 360 which was in my humble opinion, probably the worst engine Ford ever made and I was a Ford mechanic back in those days. Story at the time was the 360 was designed to be a low rpm industrial engine and was never intended to go in a pick up. Of course that might be bs but hard to imagine engineers purposely designing such a gutless low power V-8 on purpose… My apologies to anyone ( all three of you…) who feel otherwise.
The 4 barrel 390 and 428 were also FE engines but they were worthy of some respect.
Your mileage won’t change much but you will definitely make a lot more power with the 460 when you put the hammer down. If you want to hot rod it, the sky (and your wallet) is the limit…
