07 E350 blower only going thru defrost while lugging the engine(FIXED)

07 E350 5.4 dual AC

As tittle states, I only have air coming out the defrost in certain conditions like idling, WOT and with cruise control on, here's the weird part I already did the vacuum canister mod on it, replaced the check valve and does blow thru vents if I set the cruise control, but if I use the accelerator and only if I lug the engine the air goes to defrost but if I'm at WOT I have air come out the vents.

Anyone ever run to these problem?

Your problem shows classic loss of engine vacuum behaviour.

What vacuum canister mod did you do? And are you certain the canister is now plumbed correctly and is holding vacuum? There is a dedicated in and out on these things and if the lines are reversed the cansiter does nothing.

I bought an OEM vacuum canister and only has one vacuum port.

So the mod consists of fixing this problem by bypassing the factory canister and installing a new one to avoid removing the dashboard.

I got the vacuum line coming from the engine(factory location) plumbed to the vacuum check valve (suction side of the valve) then I got one line going to the canister and the other going into the soft HVAC vacuum manifold.

Now that I think about it I think I just answered my own question, there might be a leak somewhere up top on either the HVAC controls or something else, that's probably why it's loosing vacuum.

But just for reference here's how the check valve is plumbed

E=engine

VC= Vacuum Canister

HVAC= to HVAC manifold

Having dealt with this same initial issue on three different E-Series you still have a leak someone in your re-plumbed system, I would look towards whatever new vacuum canister or reservoir you used.

So just noticed there's an access panel on the dash board for the vac solenoids, problem is I found it right after I took the dash board apart, durrrrrrfff.

So I put air inside the black vac line coming from HVAC controls, and there's a massive leak on the vacuum manifold, pressed it in a little bit with my fingers and the leak stopped but as soon as I release pressure the leak starts, so Its safe to say I found the vac leak.

Now the question is how to fix it?
I have 2 options I think, if you have any other option feel free to post it for future readers.

1: splice the vacuum lines using barbed fittings

2: glue it together with sealant

Heres the leak, didn't take much to leak, used my lungs for pressure

That fixes leaks to the outside. How about to the inside? Does Ford stock the part? Dorman? Pick-n-pull?

The black vacuum line is the one that comes from the vac canister, so if it's loosing vac that's where the problem is no?

As for replacement I did a quick scroll and didn't find anything new only used and Lord knows if it too will leak.

Seems like the sealant was the best option in my case. The vacuum hoses on the male side are glued or something I couldn't take them apart.

So this is where I used the sealant.

Note used John Deere silicone sealant, so If I ever need to take it apart it would be next to impossible so just an FYI.

Finally decided to do the entire base with sealant just in case.

JWA can confirm but I don’t read much about that manifold failing. I’d head to the pick-n-pull and grab one to test. It might be different for cargo vans which don’t have rear AC (blue line?).

I can't say 100% definite but I believe nearly every E-Series beginning 1997 had the blue vacuum line installed--without rear A/C it might have been capped off just inside the driver's side lower B-pillar.

The HVAC pod located on the dashboard uses a short vacuum harness from the system's Function Control electro-vacuum switch (Heat, A/C, Vent, Off, etc) to the plastic plumbing connecting the various vacuum solenoids or control doors. If OP's leak is within that assembly replacing that harness is fairly easy but the dashboard trim panel surrounding the instrument cluster and radio needs to be removed to access the back side of the HVAC pod.

Here's two images that might be helpful:

Hope this helps!

Ok time to update and give this post closure with the fix.

After doing the above, went and tested the van again it kept doing the same thing, after further investigating the lines and solenoids I noticed the recirculating vent door wasn't closing all the way. I thought that there might of been something not allowing it to not fully close but no cigar.

After putting a hose on the solenoid and sucking the line with vacuum the valve wasn't closing all the way, I manually pressed the solenoid rod rod down and held for a couple of seconds then released itself, so I used my mouth to suck the vacuum line and sure enough it didn't hold vacuum. So I wired the solenoid rod clossrd for the mean time and capped the line and it's working great now, just ordered a replacement vacuum solenoid and should get here in a couple of days.

Thanks to all that replied to this thread and to JWA for posting that great thread with the diagram, very helpful.

Just for reference here's the solenoid for anybody experiencing the same problem.

and the diagram that JWA posted.

^^^^ Good information and images for a similar issue should it come up in the future.

Thanks for updating and closing out this repair!
