Hello I own a 2004 E250 with a 4.6l motor, recently my transmission has been acting up I got a code P0743 and then a Code P0740 ,when it decides to run shifts great, I can even shift into reverse no problem but when I go to Drive RPM drops and engine shuts off. Then sometimes it works great runs shifts smooth goes into OD no problem. I am leaning towards a faulty Transmission control solenoid valve . Wiring looks good but maybe coil breaks down? I would appreciate any help this is my service vehicle and I do A/C work so it’s killing me this time of year. Thanks again.

In a non Ford car I had, stalling when shifting to D was caused by the torque converter locking up at the wrong time. No codes so I think it was a mechanical problem like something sticking in the valve body.
Your transmission might be newer than the ones Mark Kovalsky knows by heart but he might suggest where to look.
Figure out what transmission you have (4R75E?) then check the appropriate subforum.
I replace 2 of the solenoids in transmission also filter , cleaned all plugs and connections. Seems to be working correctly now. The rubber gasket on the transmission filter was very brittle and hard when trying to remove from opening. This vehicle had been setting up for at least 12 years. I am thinking that didn’t help.I am going to rebuild this winter , replace all o rings. Thanks for the help.
