rubber floor mat install

I've started getting the interior together and I'm a little disappointed in the way the rubber mat is laying down. The wrinkles and the "puffy" look around the center hump is making me want to give up trying to get it to lay down flat. Actually had it in our spray booth to heat it up AND used an iron and towel to take out a huge crease in it. Do you guys have any tips and maybe what company makes a better mat.I think this is an American carpet company mat? thanks as always. P.S. 1977 F-350 4-speed.

Is anything holding it from fully relaxing? I've installed multiple carpets and for the most part they've all either been oversized or seat holes, shifter hole, etc. were too small or slightly out of place and those things can keep it bunched up. When I was part time help in the upholstery shop I was taught to fold the carpet edges back about a foot, put it in approximately centered, then work from the middle out, making sure it fit the contours of the floor, trimming/slicing as you go. It wasn't uncommon to have to trim an inch or so off a side to get it to sit right under the sill plate or a couple inches to get it to lay right up under the dash and I say better than 50% of the pass-thru stuff need a little clearance slice.

I had the same issue on my 4wd 79 F250 with a 4 spd. The vinyl floor mat laid down something awful over the trans hump. I might not got the correct one, but then again it was free from a fellow FTE member, so I am not complaining.

But it did not have any vinyl on the sides of the seats or back under the seat very far. I fixed that with bonded edge carpet. As far the waves and puffy look. I applied some of this, actually built it up in some areas around the shifter. Also used it on the on the inside of the doors (outer skin). No more tin can sound when closing doors.

Self adhesive foam.
Amazon Amazon
Also used it on the inside of the fire wall sort of up under the dash in some areas.

I also used the LMC EVA sound deadener/heat shield kit. It fit like junk, but I made it work. Cut, cut trim, duct tape.
https://www.lmctruck.com/1973-79-for...at-shield-kits

1st lay done NO sound deadener/heat shield.

With sound deadener/heat shield and build up of self adhesive foam to fill the looseness.

My bonded carpet side of the seat/floor and back wall trick. I uses the foam in the low recessed sections on the back wall. Also can see my home made risers for the 01 SD CC rear seat.

A little wavey on the passenger side still.

W/ carpet floor mats.

Is you truck 2wd or 4wd? Auto or manual trans? It matters as far as the trans hump height. I know a 2wd auto trans hump is lower and welded to the cab floor. 4wd and 4 spd trans cover is taller and bolted on.

After all the work over and over I got the dvrs side to lay down ok ish. The passenger side almost made me trash can the whole thing and just paint the interior with DIY bed liner kit.

Let it heat up in the sun, use a heat gun or hair dryer, lay a folded up towel on the crease and then some weight on it like a brick, tool box ect...

there really nothing holding it up,we had it in the heated paint booth for 1 hour and I used an old iron to try taking out one of the big creases. It just wont "hug" the trans plate, which is stepped or the area just in front of the seat. it's a full mat that goes to the back of the cab.

Then time to build up the "gap" with that foam I recommended or something like Boom Mat, Kilmat, Dynamat, sound deadener.

Be aware that some sound deadener stuff can "out gas", produce a funny chemicals smell in a real hot environment.

Take a look at Stock Interiors in either NC or SC Forget but was very heavy, thick and molded to fit my 4x4 high hump floor..
Takes preferable 2 people to handle it. Do not lay in sun to warm up.
I installed mine during cold weather here in Ala and was quite a process.
Very happy with the outcome..

Thanks Rich.
Trim rings,,,,,WELL not yet, looking for originals.
Found some but you know the tabs were all broke off but a couple.
I have a set of the smaller ones but I need the large ones.
If you have a set that looks decent, let me know and send them to me...
Thank you, Alex

Well you know me, I always have a set of "spares" on hand. Lol The 4 spd is easy enough to source, there are a lot available on the web and repop. The xfer case not so much, let me go check the parts shed.
