Hi guys, I’ve been looking at some wheels for my truck. It’s a 1978 f150 with no lift I’m hoping to run a 33x12.5r15 and I’m looking at a set of 15x10 wheels but they have 4.5 inches of backspacing. Is it just me or does that seem like too much? I’ve got 33s on the truck now on what I think are 15x7 wheels with 3.5 backspacing and they rub at full lock. I’m just wondering if I could run new wheels with that big of a backspacing and not rub horribly, thanks for any help
Yeah that’s what I was thinking, I just had these wheels sitting around and now that I’ve gotten the truck driveable I’m looking for something that’ll actually work well
15x8 wheels are a great choice if you want drivability. 32x11.50's always worked good on Ford and Chevy back in the day on 15x8's and that's what I still have on my K10. 33's fit but usually do rub a little and unless you lift it they just looked too big in my opinion.
I had a set of 32/11.50-15s once, on some 15x7s that came on the truck in '86, they never would stay balanced though. They'd balance in a shop, then within a hundred miles they'd be out of balance I thought the wheels were 15x8s too, I scrapped them with some old tires after measuring one at 7". I really like the 15x8s with 31/10.5-15s combos been running ever since.
Thanks for the input guys, 15x8s seem like a good idea and I like the tire size y’all are suggesting. The truck only rubs at full lock and it’s not horrible when it does
I am sure (at full lock) the inside of the tire is rubbing on the radius arms...correct?
Ol rule of thumb in my book was always 2"/2.5" wide rim for X wide tire. So a 10" wide rim for a 12.50" wide tire. Any thing like a 7"/8"/9" wide rim can get the side walls to balloon/be well rounded and you can suffer handling issues especially when low PSI or a load on the truck. And get the side wall damaged (curbed or rock cut if off roading) real easy.
This is a chevy obviously I don't have any Ford 1/2 tons anymore. but I ran the same 32/11.50-15's on it and it looked about the same in the wheel wells. 10.50's are the most popular and probably the best for absolute clearance but the 32's should work if your springs aren't too saggy.
