What is an EGR valve and can I do this myself? I am pretty good with a wrench as in brake pads and oil changes, but this electronic stuff is baffling to me. Sould I do this or pay a pro?
BTW, my truck has a "Service Engine Soon" light illuminated and this is what a scope read. Mech. said to replace would be near $400.
Rarely goes bad. Code is usually thrown if something upstream or down stream is wrong. Get a service manual and test it. It is not electronic.
You can swap it yourself with basic handtools. But keep in mind that it is an Emissions part and one that has a longer warranty than your regular 3/36.
Monsta,
I have 45000 miles on the truck. One complication to the warranty issue may be that as soon as I hit 36k, I dumped the Cat and put duals on......Problem?
Vinny,
May also be an O2 sensor. I don't know, they may have changed it, but I know at one time the codes for Check (Service) Engine Soon were for multiple possibilities not just one specific thing as in "could be" EGR "could be" O2 sensor.
At least that was my experience, and indeed it turned out to be the O2.
Good luck,
Duncan
The guys at the oil chang place showed me how to test the egr valve it's pretty easy to test. Can't seem to remember how though. Stop by one they will probubly show you how fo free.
Thanks fellas,
I talked to a buddy of mine who told me how to "free" it up. I will do that and then disconnect my battery per his instructions and see whats up. I'm to the point that I just want to poke that dand little bulb out behind the Service Engine spot. My truck has never run better, but when I have a new client in the truck they always say "Nice truck, hey whats that light on for?"
Its just a nuisance at this point.
Vinny
