starter drags when hot, I have replace the starter, fender mount solenoid, the brain box on the fender, checked and charged the battery just to be sure. Installed a heat sheild on the new starter, have not changed the cable to the starter. please help.
You need to see how many amps the starter is pulling, and if the battery can provide enough amps
The VAT 40 machine checks this and you can use a DVOM if it is the right one and you are quick
Your battery bshould stay above 10.6 and not drop into the 9s when cranking
Your starter should pull in around 200 amps and spin at around 180
If the starter is dragging, you will see 320 amps or so (new starter time)
If the battery is no good you will see 9.6v or so
If your wire to the starter has resistance you will have voltage drop at the starter
The above tests are done at the battery terminals (do the voltage test at the starter wire, on the starter, to test the voltage drop through that wire)
