Possible starter problem?
Just this past week, my truck has developed this problem, it's never done this before
Sometimes on a warm/hot start, the starter won't spin over. I hear it kick out, but no spin. When I try it again, it starts as normal.
It's done this to me about 5 times now, and I'm worried it's going to leave me stranded.
Battery is good, cables are almost new, solenoid seems fine (it works). That Just leaves the starter.
What do you guys think?

Did you check the connection to the starter itself?

Aw, The come back kid returns with once again with a new problem.
Hmm sometimes we have to practice what we preach!
Trouble shoot should be one of 4 things
Click, click, click, click= loose wire/cable, starter, or solenoid, battery.

do you have a heat shield over the starter? It could be a heat issue.

It's not click click click like a battery or bad connection. It's just one click. The starter kicks out and engages the flexplate, but does not turn.
No heat shield, but it shouldn't need one.

have you load tested the battery? I could just be a bad starter but definitely double check everything.

Load test shows good.
I'm just curious why it's doing this. We have a backhoe that does the exact same thing. (It will kick out but not spin. Then start fine the second time)

The starter is
dragging .. this is caused by a fried and/or gummed up armature and/or field coils.

Ahh, thanks numberdummy. I knew there was a technical term for this. I know it's not an unusual problem.
So is it something that needs to be fixed soon before it fails or will it live like that?

Sooner or later, usually sooner...the armature and/or field coils will burn up and/or get so gummed up, the starter will die.

Ok. I think I've got a LT warranty on it anyway.

Make sure you get the correct starter. 1970/74 351C = A/T is different than M/T.

Yea. I worked at the parts house for a few years. I'll find the right one.

Hey 351. No disrespect meant towards the place you work but it is documented on here the trouble a lot of folks having with aftermarket stuff. I read you have LT but I got a suggestion for you to mole over. How 'bout sending yours out to be rebuilt by a shop that specializes in starters and alternators? Contact Mike @ Genco Auto Electric. 145 W. Broadway Rd. Suite 12,Mesa. 481-644-9088. I've used them a few times in the past. Cheap and no problems. See if my name will get ya a discount.

Ill keep it in mind Jeff. No offense taken about the aftermarket junk. I don't work there anymore anyway haha. I know some of it is junk off the shelf.
The starter I have now is actually an old autolite starter. Was put in New, Years ago by my ol' man. Weird part is that it hasn't done it again since last week.
