Starter doesn't want to work when hot.

It starts great when cold. But, if I kill the engine and try to restart it it sounds like an almost dead battery and it dims the dash lights.

Do you think it's the starter... or perhaps the starter solenoid (mounted on the inner fender, the first thing the + batt cable goes to)? You could try turning the key to 'run' and shorting across the solenoid with some screwdrivers... or you could just replace the solenoid. If it's the original one, it's probably going to go bad eventually, anyway, and it's pretty cheap.

it's not the solinoid. clean all grounds for a good connection, make sure solinoid wire to starter clean and tight. if no improvement, replace starter, brushes inside are bad. heat will kill a starter.

The thing is the starter looks new. My mechanic buddy told me it could be timing.

More reason to suspect the starter, could be a cheap spray paint overhaul.
If you think it is a timing problem, plug the coil wire to see if it cranks faster without any spark.

Tap the starter a couple times with a hammer (just a few firm taps), then try starting it.

I had a starter in our Cherokee that was going bad, and it was turning slow and other times it wouldn't even start, but I'd hear the relay click. A couple taps with a tire iron (it was what I had handy), and I was on my way again.

What year is your truck, and which engine does it have?

possible, like I said starters don't like heat. if it cranks slow next time when hot, do like jimsrebel said, if it cranks normal, you need to set the timeing. if timeing too far advanced, will cause the truck to overheat too

Thanks all for the help. it's a 84 with a 351W. That's a good idea with the coil. I'll try both that and the hammer tap method and see if I can figure it out.

careful wacking it with a hammer. it was never designed to be hit like that, and parts inside will break easy. if you have to hit something with a hammer to make it work, it's time to replace it.

Have you done a load test on your battery? They can fail with heat too. I think you're on the right track but a load test is a simple check...

Do ya have long tube headers on that 351?? If so how close is the exhaust to the starter? If its fairly close I think your original diagnosis is probably spot on. They make heat insulation that can be wrapped around the starter and secured with a large hose clamp. Probably want to go ahead and change the starter out too.

Starter isn't spray painted.
Battery is 2 months old.
No headers.

When I got the truck 2 months ago I replaced the battery. It started making weird starting noises and I discovered bothe starter bolts were extremely loose. The problem I've noticed now is its a pain in the put to restart when hot. I'll have to try and start several times before she'll spinn like normal. This leads me to believe it is a starter issue and it's prolly going out. It looks like a fairly new autozone starter which means it's a piece of crap anyways. I try and get parts like that from o'reilly's. The quality is better and most of their stuff including sensors are made right here in the USA.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a bad cable. Check the ends to see if oil had seeped into the connections. New cable cured the problem.

I had a very similar problem... turned out to be the starter solenoid. Keep us posted if you figure it out. I really want to see what this turns out to be.

I may be stating the obvious, but you might be able to take your starter up to O'Reillys or Autozone or the like and have them test it. It could save you a bunch of headache.
