So my old girl is showing her age again, noticed last summer a small hint of blue smoke when I started the truck. It was random and it doesn't use any oil, well now every time I start it I get a big blue puff of smoke! Once started no more smoke or anything else, but with the smoke I'm also using oil. I already changed the pvc valve which didn't fix anything. Also the vent hose from the drivers valve cover to intake tube is weeping oil. Just installed a new one last week from the dealer and inside is all oil saturated already.
2004 f350 5.4 with 192k. Motorcraft oil and filter EVERY 3k since i bought her new sure didnt help
Any idea on what to do to fix the problem without doing a motor rebuild? Motor runs perfect by the way
Pull the valve covers and make sure the oil drains are clear. If it's not draining quick enough and pooling around the valves, it could be leaking past the stem seals when you first shut it off which would give you the puff on startup. That excess oil in the valve train will also get slung around and pulled through the breather system easier. You also might just need new stem seals, or a valve job. Compression and leak-down test will tell you if you need to dig deeper into a valve or ring sealing issue.
What viscosity oil being used? 10w-40?
On my former truck (non F) it started using 1 qt engine oil at 30K. Swapped from factory recommended 5w-30 to 10w-40, oil usage went way down, sold it at 350k miles still running great.
