My E40D in my '96 F250 with 226k is giving me trouble. If I can't fix it (see other thread), I thought it might be worth doing a conversion to standard-shift.
Has anyone actually done this? I can find youtube videos (probably) but I wanted to hear actual survivor stories if anyone has one to share.
I did this last year on one of my trucks. It was a fun project that took a couple weeks working evening and weekends. I did a write up of sorts that you are more than welcome to read through (see below). I swapped a M5OD and I'm guessing you're leaning towards a zf5 seeing that you have a F-250. It should be the same process though. I personally looked for and found a cheap donor truck instead of trying to find the individual parts at the pick n pull.
Don't forget all those used parts you will be putting in may have problems too. Probably not so much with brackets, but normally transmission are tested after they are installed. If it works, you got a smile on your face, if it makes noises/does not work, you'll be drinking awhile wishing you never swapped it out.

Nothing about that sounds like a "fun project" but now I know what it would take. Did you have to do anything about the VSS, PSOM, and other electronics?
Ooph. Well at least now I know what it would take. I mean, I guess I had an idea but seeing the photo brings it home. What did you do about the VSS and PSOM and other electronics?

Oh it was fun sir, I had a big ol smile on my face the whole time dreaming about shifting like an idiot and doing burnouts.
I think I mentioned it in my thread, you have to have the shifter mechanism on the side of the transmission in Park or Neutral, then ziptie it out of the way.
