New Brakes

Had oil change today and apparently my
front brakes have about 3 mm left of pad. Truck has 28k miles.

Dealership quoted me $350 to turn both rotors and new pads. Is this worth it?

I’m debating on getting some ceramic pads and finding a shop to install them.

What are my options here ?

edit. Pics are a few posts below.
Forgot to mention, I tow a 5-6k lb trailer 2-3 times a week for about 20-30 miles a day. So
figure about 100 miles a week, tops?

Get a second opinion or take the keys away from your teenagers.
those brakes should last 60 to 80k.

Without knowing how thick your rotors are, I don't have a clue. That said, many vehicles are having rotors that are thin enough that after a set of pads, there might not be enough left. So, you need THIS to check if it is turnable. That and the minimum spec of the rotor.

However, if you want an all around upgrade, why turn the rotors? Might as well do pads and rotors. I would think the dealer would allow you to bring your own pads if you asked them. I looked up my rotor HERE and found the discard thickness. Measure it and decide for yourself if it can be turned. Again, you might decide to go with better rotors so it's up to you.

Not if it were mission critical, I wouldn't.

It's brakes on a pickup, not the space shuttle. Economy pads from Autozone would work just fine.

Normally I get two sets of pads for one set of rotors. I don't turn rotors. Few enough techs know how to do it right any more, certainly not the guys at the auto parts store if you can even find one that does it. Yes, I know how to turn rotors. Learned years ago when that was common.

I wouldn't trust the dealerships "estimate" of remaining pad thickness. My wife went in for a recall and they did their bazillion point inspection. It said the pads were at 3 or 4mm. My wife cooks rotors, so it's not unreasonable to assume she had wiped out a set of pads in ~50,000 miles. The front seemed to have a bit of a shimmy when applying the brakes. I bought a set of rotors and pads and started the install. Pulled the pads and there's at least 6mm on every pad. The rotors looked good too. Damn dealers. Since I had it apart, I went ahead and installed the new parts and checked everything out.

I was there when he put his colorful gauge on the pads. It was a tad thicker than the red gauge (3mm) but less than the yellow gauge (4mm)

Frank, you posted your pictures while I was writing my post.

Your pads look OK. They're not down to the squeal prongs yet. You should get at least another 5,000 miles out of those pads. I base that estimate on how many miles you say are on them now. That's a conservative estimate. Putting an actual micrometer on them is a better way to gauge how much material is left.

The rotors don't look heavily scored and are plenty thick.

If it was me, I would buy a set of pads and plan to put them in in 5,000 miles. Unless you feel a shake in the steering when when braking, the rotors don't need to replaced.

that’s what they estimated also, 3-5k miles before I need them.
Should i go factory for pads or get some aftermarket ones?

Your fifth and sixth pictures show plenty of pad left. I wouldn't trust their "gauge".

If you don't feel the brakes are working well then by all means replace the pads. I tend to replace my pads well before they get to the squeal prongs.

If you were getting 80,000 miles out of your brakes the argument would be why would you go aftermarket when you can get that many miles out of them. But with so few miles on your brakes, OEM doesn't seem to be a good fit. I use Bosch brakes for all my family vehicles. But that brand doesn't show up much here on the forum. Powerstop is probably one of the most recommended brands, but I haven't used them.

I avoid ceramic pads. They have less dust but for me they don't stop as well. I'll take brake dust any day for better braking. I'll probably go with semi-metallic.

Following. I've used Power Stop rotors and pads on my '08 4Runner with very good results. Wondering if anyone has used them on their Super Duties?
