I wanted to change the inner u-joint on the passenger side and was wondering if it's possible to do it with the inner shaft still connected up in there to the diff, This would be using the usual big c-clamp type tool. I'd love to pull the shaft and work on it on the bench, but I'm figuring disconnecting it from the diff isn't a simple affair.
Thanks for the reply. Could you clarify what you meant there? I'm not following.
The wheel, 4x4 hub, the spindle hub. The boot that covers the ujoint, then it slid right out. It's retained into position by the wheel bearing nuts and outer C clip.
I cut the pinch clamp on the rubber boot and slid out the outer shaft, but the inner is locked into the carrier. When I push and pull on it, it moves slightly giving the feeling either there's a spring clip holding it in place (like a cv joint would have) or there's an internal c-clip inside the axle that needs to be removed 1st (like the rear axle has).
This seems to be a Dana 28, but I'm wondering if the 35 works the same. Anyway, according to the guy, the diff needs to be dropped and clip removed internally (he shows it @ ~3:35) then that inner passenger side shaft can be removed. .

OK so I remember mine is a Dana35. Is your front diff/axles the same?
I did more digging and pretty much confirmed there is an internal clip that holds that shaft in. The diff needs to be dropped to get it out. Perhaps something unique was going on with yours', Black3, that made you able to just slide it out without having to do that.
