Tore apart the entire front end to replace bearings, seals, and gears. Well grabbed the yoke to pull the inner shaft out on the passenger side, gave a good yank and landed on my ****, with the stubby outer shaft and 2" of the inner shaft. I looked and couldn't believe the inner shaft was snapped in 2!! I pryed the inner shaft out and started to look at it to find it has been broken before and welded! I flew off the handle then.
Well now here I am with a sunday only half behind me everyone closed and no truck for Monday morning work.
Where does a guy find the inner shaft for a 1971 3/4 ton 4x4??????
Not one autowrecker in the area has one. I have found 2 3/4 ton front axles from 75-79?? They both have disc brakes and open knuckles.
I don't suppose the inner shaft would be the same? Any one know? Cause if it is I will have my truck fixed in a few hours.
I don't suppose to have a Machinist fix it would really hold together would it?
the right side axle on the 77 250 axles are 34 3/4" from the end to the middle of the universal. I know they are about an inch longer than the axles in my 70 F100, so they are probably longer than yours too. I haven't been able to find the shafts for my truck either, so for temporary use, I just installed the outers (or what was left of them) to keep the hubs sealed, and installed 1 3/4" rubber expanding freeze plugs in the axle ends to keep those sealed. I also pulled the front driveshaft to keep everything from spinning.
If the inner shaft measured 34 3/4" then maybe they will work because mine are roughly 35" long 1 1/4" diameter with 30 splines.
I am just concernd that all the work I put into pulling the shaft may come up empty. If they are both 3/4 tons and both are Dana 44 and both are off Ford trucks only difference is open or closed knuckle shouldn't the guts be the same?????
