Catalytic conundrum!

Hey folks. So I bought a 1999 F-250 Super Duty a while back. Shortly after I got the truck, the check engine light came on. I had codes telling me that the engine is running rich. So I figured on changing bothe the MAF Sensor, and the O2 Sensors. I wasn't sure how many O2 sensors my truck was supposed to have, so I crawled under it to check. When I did I saw that there was no downstream O2 sensor on my truck. Furthermore, after some research, I found that my truck has a Diesel catalytic converter instead of the gasoline converter. My truck however is not throwing any code for a missing sensor, which leads me to believe that the computer has been reprogrammed to account for the sensor having been removed.

I am trying to find out if there is some logical reason someone would use a Diesel Cat, and reprogramming the computer, rather than just spending the money to have the proper converter installed.

Is this some kind of performance trick, or was someone taking an unusual route to cut corners?

Please help me make sense of this.

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

I have a 99 F250 V10 as well. There is no 02 sensor down stream of the cat, only in each head pipe. My OEM cat was stolen, and the PO installed a "universal" cat from magnaflow. It runs fine, no codes bla, bla, but its rated for far to little for the trucks weight, 6k GVWR, not to mention with a load. It was about $150 from what I see. The magnaflow eq for our trucks is $800 or so, and a CARB version if your in smog check land is something like $2500. Im gonna guess your PO slapped on a oil burner cat thinking its big, cheap, and will work with the GVWR + any load our trucks can handle. The magna on mine allowed the PO to smog it, but Id guess it will be a short lived cat.
